“Where you go, I will go” - Ruth 1:16
Because of famine in Israel, Naomi and her husband left Bethlehem (House of Bread), to wander into another land looking for sustenance. Was Elimelech wrong to take his sons and wife to a different land? “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did whatever he wanted.” Judges 17:6 (HCSB)
I’m not prepared to judge a man whose name means “My God is King”. He was concerned for his family.
Yet Bethlehem … How symbolic: “the place of bread (nourishment), was not living up to its name. People were leaving; leaving the Promised Land. During those days Israel was ruled by judges. Every man lived according to his own definition of right / wrong. Does that sound familiar? What does the culture today allow that our faith will not? For me television is a seductive tool. Though I watch news, documentaries, presidential debates, the Property Brothers … I know that, if that is my sustenance, I too will wander.
