HIGHWAYS OF RETURN BUILT ON GOD’S COVENANT

HIGHWAYS OF RETURN
BUILT ON GOD’S COVENANT

BY JOHN PROSSER, PRESIDENT, OEUSA

The promise that God will bring His people home to Zion is not rooted in human ingenuity but in the unchanging nature of His covenant promises. From the beginning, God bound Himself to His people through promises that He alone guarantees.

His promises to Abraham in Genesis 12:1–3 established a trajectory in which land, descendants, and blessing are not men’s objectives but divine obligations. Later, in Genesis 17:7–8, God declares that His covenant is everlasting and that He gave His people the Land as an inheritance to all generations. These promises form the foundation for Israel’s future restoration.

Throughout Israel’s history, God reinforces His intention to fulfill these promises despite the people’s failures. In Leviticus 26:40–45, after outlining the consequences of disobedience, God declares that He will remember His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and that He will not reject His people.

The return to the Land is not conditioned on Israel’s strength but on God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. Similarly, Deuteronomy 30:3–5 affirms that God Himself will gather His people from the nations and bring them back to the Land of their fathers.

The prophets consistently confirm the certainty of God’s faithfulness. Ezekiel 36:22–24 reinforces that God will restore His people “for the sake of His holy Name,” gathering them from the nations, and bringing them back to their own Land. The restoration of Israel is not a human project—it is a divine act grounded in God’s character.

This covenantal trajectory continues into the New Testament. Paul affirms in Romans 11:28–29 that Israel remains beloved for the sake of the patriarchs, and that the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable. The apostle does not reinterpret or diminish the promises—he reinforces their permanence.

God’s commitment to bring His people home is not symbolic—it is the fulfillment of His covenant with the fathers, carried forward by His faithfulness.

These Scriptures demonstrate that God’s intention to bring His people home to Zion is not dependent on political strategy or national strength. It is the outworking of His covenant, guaranteed by His character, and sustained by His faithfulness and commitment to fulfill all He has promised.

He prepares the way. He removes obstacles that they could never overcome on their own. He brought Israel out of Egypt, led them through the wilderness, and restored them after exile. In each case, the decisive factor was dependent on God alone.

This is indeed the day of salvation! Take comfort in knowing that the God we serve is a mighty, holy God. He has made every provision for the return of His people.

And a great road will go through that once deserted land. It will be named the Highway of Holiness. . . . Only the redeemed will walk on it. Those who have been ransomed by the LORD will return. They will enter Jerusalem [Zion] with singing, crowned with everlasting joy. Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be filled with joy and gladness. Isaiah 35:8–10 NLT
